Career Pathway to Become a Marine Engineer in the Merchant Navy
The Diploma in Marine Engineering (DME) Programme is specially designed for diploma holders aspiring to build a successful career as Marine Engineers in the Merchant Navy.
This intensive pre-sea training programme provides advanced technical knowledge and practical training in marine engineering systems, ship machinery operations, propulsion systems, marine electrical technology, automation, safety procedures, maintenance practices, and engine room management as per international maritime standards.
The programme combines classroom learning, simulator training, workshop practice, and onboard familiarization to prepare candidates for technical and operational responsibilities onboard merchant vessels.
Upon successful completion of the course, cadets become eligible to join ships as Trainee Marine Engineers / Junior Engineers. After completing the required onboard sea service and competency examinations conducted under maritime regulations, candidates become eligible to obtain the Marine Engineer Officer (MEO) Class IV Certificate of Competency.

| Eligibility | Candidates must possess a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Electrical Engineering, or Electrical & Electronics Engineering with minimum 50% marks in the final year. Candidates with Diploma in Shipbuilding Engineering (4-Year Programme) with minimum 50% marks are also eligible. Minimum 50% Marks in English either in 10th, 12th, or Diploma Examination. |
| Age Limit | Maximum 28 Years at the commencement of the course. Relaxation applicable for SC/ST and OBC candidates as per government norms. |
| Medical Standards | Candidates must be medically fit as per DG Shipping medical guidelines. Eyesight should meet maritime standards with no color blindness. Maximum permissible eye power up to ±2.5 may be accepted as per applicable regulations. |
